My Own Utopian Experiment #18: Sharing good things. It is the time for June book review!
As the title says, the book is about justice and mercy. Personally, the book is about humanity, integrity, passion, purpose, mission, human strengths, resilience, hopes, and strong evidence that we have good people on this earth planet. It is a memoir of a lawyer who fights for the poor, wrongfully convicted, unfairly convicted and even minors.
Many of you may know his name, Bryan Stevenson, some well-known cases and his clients. A few of his cases were exposed to media so I am not listing the names here not to spoil your reading. There are so many cases saving lives and some are not so fortunate. You would scream for victories and heartbroken by the other. This book has lots of bitter sweet moments. You will find yourself hoping for the best while you are not connected to any of the people in the story. I witness my own humanity. You will witness yours. It is heart wrenching to know this is not a novel but it gives hopes that someone is fighting for them.
At the end of this book, you will look at justice and mercy differently and more sensitive for this topic. Mr. Stevenson is an extraordinary man who goes as far as humanly possible. There are still things we all can do at our own level based on our beliefs. When everyone does not ignore hard topics and helps a bit, that becomes a hope for someone who is desperate for life. A lot of times, that’s all they need to go on.
I have my own philosophy about resilience and purpose. This is the one of the best books on resilience and purpose. It is not trying to teach you anything but I witness the gruesome details on what he needs to do to save someone. The amount of pressure saving someone’s life alone is heavy. Many things were against him, the justice systems, threats, fund issues, etc. He is not dealing with this kind of cases time to time. He does do this full-time as a non-profit so the clients do not have to pay (most of them can’t afford anything). As far as I know, his organization runs on purely fundraising. This book gives a clear picture what resilience, purpose and mission look like.
This book is so heartwarming for me as evidence that they are smart and good people who do really nice things. I want to spread the good news as a book review. This is a small step that I can do. I am not affiliated with any sites for book reviews. I am not sure what the future holds but I do because I want to share good books.
We can go further beyond reading the book. It is about integrity, doing the right things when nobody is watching. It does not have to be as big as Mr. Stevenson. We can put the shopping carts in the right place when we are done. We can donate when an organization carries the same belief as you do. We recycle in the way that we should take care of our home, earth planet. We try to be kind for all beings, not only humans, plants, animals and beyond like sending good thoughts to people. We wish them well. We do not litter and pick up all the trash after ourselves. We try our best not to hold any prejudice about anyone. We try to teach our kids with the same values. Everything counts.
While I know this is just one story but one is enough. I am full of hopes, goodness and humanity. It was nice to get to know him though a book. This is not covered in the book but he never got married and has no kids. He once told an interviewer that his work is not suitable for a marriage. What a dedication! You will see why in the book. it is comforting just to know he is out there under the same sky and living on the same planet.
Sending my love as always. Enjoy the summer!
P.S I am not planning to leave a link for a book purchase since I am not affiliated with any of them but I know we all have our favorite site to look up a book. 🙂
